WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND THIS?

Does anyone know the story behind the Lions Club Project to build the Mossyrock School Tennis Court? When was it done? Who worked on it? Do you recognize anyone?

These pictures were labeled Lions Club Tennis Court Project and are just a few from the hundreds of pictures taken by Mr. Laurence Deacon while he was Principal of Mossyrock High School. The Historical Picture Committee is preparing a collection that will be available at the Mossyrock All-School Reunion July 30-31 & August 1, 2010.

The next All-School Reunion meeting is Feburary 6 at 10:00 a.m., MHS Library.

Chris Cucchiara's Story: email Dec. 21, 2009 to Sen. Dan Swecker

Sent: Monday, December 21, 2009 3:14 PM

TO: Senator Dan Swecker
FROM: Mr. Chris Cucchiara(Constituent)
SUBJECT: WA State Hwy 12 - Mossyrock Traffic Light
MESSAGE:

Dear Representative Swecker

Memorial Day weekend 2007, my son Cory became one of those DOT statistics at the subject intersection. Though he was airlifted and spent 8 days at Harborview, he was luckier than Ryan in that he survived that horrific collision and after two years of operations & rehab is as close to normal as he is ever going to be.

Following that accident there was a similar outcry from the community and an exhaustive traffic analysis performed by local residents to bring the traffic light to one of the most deadliest intersections in the state. The analysis and results of this study were provided to the appropriate DOT safety departments. The school district whose grounds abut Hwy 12 and whose elementary age students cross that intersection daily to attend school submitted a request for a traffic light to address their safety concerns.

Like many other parents in this community I assumed that the funding would soon follow the approval to install a traffic light system at the intersection. As time often does, the months of non action slipped by without many people noticing until December 8th. When I look into the Rashoff's family eyes I feel somewhat guilty that I wasn't more proactive in following up with the traffic light system request.

This time will be different. I will not rest or assume that the process will bring the traffic light system to that intersection before another driver or youthful pedestrian joins the statistics that compel our attention. I would like to offer my assistance in coordinating the necessary requirements to fund and install the traffic system. I have project management, communication skills, and time I'm willing to contribute. If necessary, I have the means and the resolve to initiate civil action if that is what it is going to prompt the state DOT to fund and install a traffic system in the next quarter. Cory's medical bills and subsequent impact on our health care system was in excess of 200,000.00 dollars. When your child is fighting for their life there is no check a parent isn't willing to write. As I stated earlier we were lucky in that we had that option. I want to assist in following through with your very visible remarks to the media that in this situation "it is my turn to ask for help".

Given the recent accident statistics at this intersection, I would expect the engineering study needed to justify the traffic system to be brief.Quite often these studies cost as much as the solution. But even more costly are the consequences of delay or non-action. Please advise how I can be of assistance in expediting the process in getting a traffic system installed.

Sincerely
Chris Cucchiara

Chris,

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I cannot even imagine what you and your family had to go through or what you may still be going through. My heart and prayers go out to you, as I am certain there has been sacrifices and hardships to overcome.
As of today, I am not certain what more work needs to be done. I have been in constant contact with WDOT and my colleagues to request a traffic light. My goal is to get the approval for funding with we are in session.

Chris, regardless of the past, now is the time to do something. If I had one simple request it would be for the entire community to help me in persuading the Chair of Transportation, Senator Haugen
http://www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Senators/Pages/haugen.aspx
in granting the necessary funding.
Thank you again for sharing your story. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.
Respectfully,

Subject: RE: Constituent: WA State Hwy 12 - Mossyrock Traffic Light

Dear Senator Swecker

I will follow up on your request to have the community and other interested parties communicate with the Transportation chair (Senator Haugen) during this session to confirm the their support for this over due transportation safety enhancement. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiry.

Best of luck with gaining funding approval for the traffic light during this session. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of further service with this initiative.

Subject: FW: Constituent: WA State Hwy 12 - Mossyrock Intersection

Below you note (editor: Above you read) the e-mail response I received from Wa State Senator Swecker regarding the process in getting a traffic system installed at the Williams - Hwy 12 intersection. Senator Swecker is doing what he can as a member of the Washington State Senate transportation committee to fund this long overdue transportation enhancement. Senator Swecker has requested that the community at large help in persuading the Chair of Transportation committee,

Senator Haugen http://www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Senators/Pages/haugen.aspx in granting the necessary funding for the traffic system. The Washington state legislature is currently in session for the next 60 days. I'm asking for your assistance in getting Senator Swecker's request and contact information for the Chair of Transportation committee, out to our community to assist in persuading Senator Haugen and his colleges to approve the necessary funding for a traffic system at the Williams - Hwy 12 intersection.

Given the state budget shortfalls and funding priorities this year, I believe it is necessary for a voluminous community response / committee input to assist with legislature prioritization of transportation requirements. Please distribute this information to as many district / community members as possible requesting that they respond to Senator Swecker's request for community assistance in persuading the transportation committee to fund and expedite the installation of the safety system before

the unthinkable happens again. Simply select the link provided (blue text) and select "e-mail" on her home page to provide your inputs.

If you require some financial support to cover the cost of flyers or other informational materials, please contact me asap for those resources. You have my permission to share the content or forward this e-mail in support of community action & response coordination. Please advise how I can be of further assistance in this effort.

Sincerely
Chris Cucchiara

Mossyrock SD Levy Info

Mossyrock School District No. 206 ELECTION DATE: FEBRUARY 9, 2010 Dear Voter: In December, the Mossyrock School District Board of Directors adopted a resolution calling for an election to seek renewal of the maintenance and operations levy. This request is to replace the existing levy that is currently being collected. It is not an additional tax. We are providing you with information on this ballot issue because we would like to inform you of the facts concerning this important election. We invite your questions. If you would like more information, please contact any school board member or the school district office at 983-3182. We appreciate your continuing interest in and support of our Mossyrock Schools. Sincerely, Dr. Karen Ernest, Secretary, Mossyrock School Board WHY A LEVY ELECTION? The Mossyrock School District receives funding from state, federal, and local sources. Most of the District’s income comes from the state, but the state does not fund at 100% of what is needed for basic education. In addition, most of the federal funds are earmarked for special programs only. Local funds from voter-approved levy collections accounts for 9.3% of the district’s budget or $550,000 per year. We are hopeful that state levy equalization funds will be available next year. Mossyrock School District will receive them contingent on levy approval. This should amount to approximately $140,862 per year, which is about 2.5% of the budget. According to Governor Gregoire’s budget proposal, several program areas (Learning Assistance Program, K-4 class size support, middle school vocational program, highly capable program) were cut. Taking into account the Governor’s recommendation, the legislature will determine exactly what reductions will be made. While this levy will not make up for anticipated cuts from the state, levy renewal will enable the district to more closely maintain educational programs at the current level and continue the programs and staffing that the levy has funded in the past. IS THIS IN ADDITION TO THE CURRENT LEVY? NO! This levy would replace the current levy which was approved two years ago. The anticipated tax rate of $1.19 per $1,000 assessed valuation is LOWER than the current levy rate. The table below will help you calculate the approximate cost. Assessed Value Annually Monthly $50,000 $ 59.50 $ 4.96 $60,000 $ 71.40 $ 5.95 $75,000 $ 89.25 $ 7.44 $100,000 $119.00 $ 9.92 WHAT IS BEING SOUGHT? The levy request is for a tax rate of approximately $1.19 per $1,000 assessed valuation (AV), which will provide $550,000 in the first year and $550,000 in the second year. HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED? The levy fund will help the district maintain its educational programs as well as provide for new books and supplies, transportation, facility maintenance, equipment, bus replacement, and extra curricular programs. HOW DO NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS’ CURRENT M & O LEVIES COMPARE? Mossyrock’s is the lowest!......Mossyrock_ $ 550,000 $1.21 per thousand (based on 2010 Tax Rates).....White Pass_ $ 964,460 $1.80 per thousand (none include bond levies)...... Morton___ $ 615,000 $1.94 per thousand ...................................................Onalaska__ $ 972,386 $2.17 per thousand More info to follow soon.

COMMUNITY MEETING

A community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12 - 3:30 p.m. at the Mossyrock Junior/Senior High School gym. Washington State Department of Transportation conducted a traffic study at the corner of Hwy 12 and SR 122/Williams St. in December to decide what safety changes could be made to that intersection. They have analyzed their data and will present their findings and plan for the upgrades. Planned speakers for this meeting will be Southwest Regional Administrator Bart Gernhart and Deputy Regional Administrator, Rick Sjolander. They have also invited the Mossyrock Mayor, the City Council, and the Washington State Patrol.

Mossy Holiday Concerts Rang in the Season

Wednesday evening before Christmas Vacation, the Mossyrock Music Department held two wonderful back-to-back Christmas concerts in the high school gym.  The north bleachers were totally full, so it was good that the concert was moved from the smaller junior high gym.  The evening began with the fourth grade students playing their recorders followed by the 5th and 6th grade band students.  We are always amazed at how much these students progress through the years.
A favorite from the sixth grade band was Rock.Com.  The students did an awesome job and really rocked the house.  Fifth grade band is huge this year and their full sound sure was impressive.  Their holiday medley was a challenging song that was very well played, and Seth Brink’s electric guitar gave a lot to the performance.

Update about Traffic Signal from Sen. Dan Swecker

Chronline.com has a guest commentary posted from Senator Dan Swecker about the Mossyrock Traffic Signal.  Here's an excerpt.

Following another highway death in Mossyrock last month I vowed to push for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection involved. It was the third fatality in five years at the junction of Williams Road and the White Pass Highway.

As the lead Republican on the Senate Transportation Committee I have worked with other legislators to secure money for safety improvements in the communities they represent.

This time I will be working to convince my colleagues that the $600,000 it could take to install a highway signal in Mossyrock would be money well spent. I know there are people in East Lewis County who would make phone calls and drive to the Capitol to deliver that message directly if need be.

But for today, the wheels are in motion. By the time the Legislature adjourns in mid-March, we will know if this vital safety improvement is still on track. For the sake of both locals and commuters I hope it is.
